A network of retrofit one-stop shops could accelerate Scotland’s net zero journey.
At this year’s BE-ST Fest International Retrofit Conference, Loco Home founder Chris Carus set out a vision for how Scotland can speed up home decarbonisation: a network of local one-stop shops supporting homeowners, community groups and local authorities alike.
The Problem
The problem is all too familiar. Retrofit projects are complicated, costly, and risky. As a result, even motivated homeowners struggle to find clear direction or trusted contractors. For older or vulnerable residents, even modest home improvements feel out of reach. Similarly, those living in tricky buildings face steep hurdles, and many fall right through the gaps in existing support.
Looking For Real Success Stories
To illustrate a better path forward, Chris compared Scotland’s current position to Ireland’s SEAI One Stop Shop programme. That model benefits from strong political backing and deep funding. In contrast, Scotland’s journey looks quite different so far. It remains smaller and grassroots-driven, growing out of services like Loco Home. For instance, Loco Home provides whole-home planning, heat pump design, vetted contractor networks, and long-term “hand-holding” through every step of the process.
The Future Of Retrofit in Scotland
Ultimately, the talk pointed toward clear, practical next steps. First, we must link community energy funding to local demand-building efforts. Second, one-stop shops should integrate directly with Home Energy Scotland. Finally, local authorities need to partner with community hubs to reach private homeowners — an area that remains a major blind spot. Fortunately, initiatives like Retrofit West and Greater Manchester’s Feel the Benefit already demonstrate what is possible at scale.
