Better retrofit, made more accessible

Loco Home Retrofit is a Glasgow-based co-operative of householders, contractors and advisers focused on promoting energy efficiency within our homes, tackling the climate crisis and keeping energy bills affordable. 

Retrofitting is the process of making changes to existing buildings to cut energy consumption and emissions. The initial focus is on the fabric of a household by reducing energy demand through insulation, airtightness and efficient ventilation. The next step is replacing boilers with low-carbon alternatives such as heat pumps. 

As an intermediary, we help households, tradespeople and professionals to navigate the often complex, disruptive and expensive process of retrofitting our homes. Many of us may wish to reduce our energy bills and reject fossil fuels but may be held back by a lack of knowledge about where to start. Loco Home Retrofit is here to demystify the retrofitting process and support homeowners in enacting energy efficiency measures in their homes.

Glasgow has some of the oldest and least energy-efficient housing stock in Europe. Retrofitting homes is key to cutting energy costs and meeting net-zero targets. By bringing together homeowners and industry professionals we are providing solutions and sharing knowledge to make properties in Glasgow both energy and cost efficient — fit for a greener future. 

Loco Home Retrofit in Action

  • Loco Home Retrofit is building a diverse community with a shared focus: to end Glasgow’s contribution to climate change. Our members can share their experiences and expertise as well as connect with trusted local contractors for their retrofitting projects.
  • Local professionals can gain the requisite knowledge and customer leads to move into the energy efficiency retrofit sector. Our range of open access events and resources will also broaden the technical knowledge of our whole community. This community wealth-building approach places knowledge, control, wealth and benefits back into the hands of our community.
  • We provide an advice service to help homeowners fully understand their retrofitting options. In addition, we are exploring scaled approaches including bulk buys and neighbourhood-scale projects. 
  • We are also pursuing projects in partnership with industry, social landlords, local authorities and other stakeholders. These initiatives will expand the impact of existing fuel poverty programmes through education, engagement and intermediation between owners.
